Half Mad Moon
Damnations TX
|
At the 11th hour, Austin's Damnations were forced to add "TX" to their moniker to differentiate themselves from a gritty rock group with same name, but one listen to this debut might better make the point. A quartet that features gorgeously dusty girl-girl harmonies courtesy of sisters Amy Boone and Deborah Kelly and a satchel of influences including country-punk ("Down the Line"), bluegrass-inflected country ("Spit and Tears"), and dour balladry ("No Sign of Water"), Damnations TX are Lone Star to the core. But don't write them off as just another alt-country outfit. Heartrending and playful, Half Mad Moon is not only a gust of fresh air across that overcrowded scene, but a welcoming effort that deserves to rise above that scene's ghettolike status. |
